There's an old saying in Chinese that we can foresee a person's whole life when he is three years old. I think it does make sense. A person's character and personality form at an early age and are hard to change when they grow up. They determine how people think and how they deal with things, therefore can also determine their potential in life.

What is the best gauge to determines someone's potential in life

Well, for the first queastion, I preper the latter. Success in life is rely on opportunity given, hard-work and perseverance. Besides, environment is also very important. The surroundings that one grows up has a big influence on one's life.

As to the second, if it is a baby, the best way to determines his potential is asking a fortune-teller.

I think there is no guage can determine a person's future. Sometimes the experience will teach us a lot. We became mature from what we suffered. The gene cannot determine anything. Our effort can achieve what we want.
